In 1999, it operated just 60 locations, but by 2020 that number had exploded past 1,400. Owned by Spencer Gifts since 1999, Spirit Halloween has become a cultural touchstone, known for its immersive store displays, animatronic props, and a wide range of costumes for all ages. The brand's success has even spawned a documentary and a feature film, cementing its place in the Halloween landscape.

Spirit Halloween's growth strategy is as clever as it is simple: fill the ghost spaces left behind by failed retailers. By turning empty big-box stores into haunted wonderlands, the company brings foot traffic back to struggling shopping centers. This pop-up model allows it to secure prime locations that would be too costly for a year-round business. Each August, the stores open with theatrical flair, drawing crowds eager to explore the latest animatronics and licensed costumes. The flagship in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, hosted a grand opening on August 1, 2026, that attracted roughly 3,000 people, a testament to the brand's enduring appeal. [edit]
