SM Entertainment is a South Korean multinational entertainment agency founded in 1995 by Lee Soo-man. It ranks among the country's largest entertainment companies and has launched the careers of numerous K-pop stars with massive global followings. The company operates as a record label, talent agency, music production house, event management firm, and music publisher. SM Entertainment played a leading role in spreading the Korean Wave internationally, with early hits from groups like H.O.T., S.E.S., and soloist BoA. Today, its roster includes major acts such as Kangta, TVXQ, Super Junior, Girls' Generation, Shinee, Exo, Red Velvet, NCT, Aespa, Riize, Naevis, and Hearts2Hearts.

The company traces its origins to SM Studio, founded by Lee Soo-man in 1989. Lee, a former singer, built a systematic trainee development model that became the template for modern K-pop. SM's first major success came with H.O.T. in 1996, followed by S.E.S. and Shinhwa. By the early 2000s, BoA's breakthrough in Japan demonstrated SM's ability to export artists beyond Korea.
