SK Telecom

SK Telecom, South Korea's largest wireless carrier, began life on March 29, 1984, as Korea Mobile Telecommunications Services Corp., a tiny consigner of Korea Telecom with 32 employees and 250 million won in capital. The company rented a cramped office in the Kwang Jang Telephone Station Building and focused on managing car phone services. In 1994, SK Group became the majority shareholder, and the company officially joined the group in 1997, rebranding as SK Telecom.

That same decade, SK Telecom pulled off a world first: in 1996, it launched the first commercial Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network, a breakthrough that shifted mobile communications from analog to digital. The company followed with other firsts: the world's first Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB) satellite, Hanbyul, in 2004, and the first commercial HSDPA network in 2006. These technical achievements built its reputation as a pioneer.

Today, SK Telecom serves roughly 23 million subscribers, about half of South Korea's mobile market. Its business spans three segments: Cellular Services (wireless voice, data, IoT, cloud, advertising), Fixed-Line Telecommunications (broadband, IPTV, cable TV), and Other Businesses (smart factory solutions, satellite broadcasting via TU Media). Notable sub-brands include Nate (online portal), June (mobile multimedia), and Moneta (banking app). The company acquired Hanaro Telecom in 2008 and CJ HelloVision in 2015, making its unit SK Broadband the second-largest cable operator after KT. Competitors opposed the CJ HelloVision deal, arguing it would unfairly concentrate market power.

In the 2020s, SK Telecom has pushed into artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and metaverse services, aiming to transform from a telecom operator into a broader digital platform company. Its revenue for fiscal 2024 reached 17.95 trillion won (about $12.15 billion), though net income fell 67.3% from the prior year.
