Roomba
United States"A clean home, simplified."
About
Roomba, the pioneering robotic vacuum cleaner brand, was introduced to the world in 2002 by iRobot Corporation. Born from a vision of domestic automation, the early Roomba models were a marvel of their time, autonomously navigating homes to tackle dust and debris. These first-generation robots utilized a system of sensors to detect walls, furniture, and stairs, allowing them to clean rooms with a degree of independence previously unseen in consumer electronics. This innovation quickly positioned Roomba as a symbol of futuristic home technology.
The Roomba line has since undergone continuous evolution, integrating increasingly sophisticated features. Today's Roombas are equipped with smart mapping technology that learns and adapts to home layouts, enabling efficient, systematic cleaning patterns. Advanced obstacle avoidance systems, powered by AI and cameras, allow them to identify and steer clear of common household hazards like cables and pet waste. Many models also offer self-emptying capabilities, docking and emptying their dustbins automatically, and some even feature integrated mopping functions, providing a more complete floor care solution. The Roomba Home App further enhances user control, allowing for customized cleaning schedules, zone cleaning, and detailed mapping of cleaned areas.
Despite its early market dominance, iRobot and the Roomba brand have faced significant challenges. Once valued at over $4 billion and holding more than half the global market share for robot vacuums in 2021, the company encountered intense competition from lower-cost manufacturers, particularly from China. A planned acquisition by Amazon in 2022, valued at $1.7 billion, was ultimately blocked by antitrust regulators in 2024, leading to a $94 million breakup fee. These pressures contributed to iRobot filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in December 2025. Subsequently, the company was acquired by its main contract manufacturer, Shenzhen Picea Robotics, along with Santrum Hong Kong. This transition marked a new chapter for the Roomba brand, aiming to navigate the competitive landscape under new ownership.
