Roadrunner Records

Marcel Coenen and Danny Weyn launched Roadrunner Records in The Hague, Netherlands, during 1980 to serve a hungry underground metal scene. The label grew fast by championing bands that pushed the boundaries of heavy sound, eventually signing Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Pantera, and Slipknot. These acts defined the sonic landscape of the late twentieth century and turned the small Dutch imprint into a global powerhouse.

Warner Music Group acquired the company in 1999, moving its headquarters from Europe to New York City. This transition transformed Roadrunner from a niche operation into a major division within a massive entertainment conglomerate while keeping its focus on heavy music. The brand identity remains rooted in the rebellious aesthetic of the genre, utilizing bold visuals and direct engagement with fans to maintain cultural relevance across decades.

The label continues to operate actively as of 2026, balancing legacy catalogs with new talent. Recent releases include Turnstile's NEVER ENOUGH: VERSIONS project and the debut album I Don't Wanna Say Goodbye by Haywire, scheduled for October 2026. Mastodon and Cold Gawd also released new material under the banner this year, proving the company still drives trends in rock and metal. [edit]
