    About

Primark opened its first shop on Mary Street in Dublin in 1969, the creation of Arthur Ryan, who ran the business for the next four decades. Outside Ireland the chain trades under its own name; at home it has always been Penneys, a distinction forced by a 1976 trademark dispute with the American department store JCPenney that pushed the Penneys name out of use everywhere else. Associated British Foods has owned the retailer since the late 1960s, and the group now intends to spin it off as a standalone public company in late 2027.

The operating model is unusual and has been since the beginning. Primark spends almost nothing on traditional advertising, sells at prices that undercut most of the high street, and until recently refused to sell online at all. Volume makes the arithmetic work: roughly 491 stores, many of them 30,000 to 80,000 square feet in prime locations, and about 80,000 employees. The retail segment of ABF turns over somewhere between £9 billion and £10 billion a year, which makes Primark the largest part of the group by sales. The company does not publish a standalone valuation, and until the spin-off is complete there is no public market price for it.

Geographically the chain is anchored in the United Kingdom, its largest market with more than 190 shops, and Ireland, where it remains a fixture of the main streets. It also operates in Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovenia and the United States, with franchised stores in the Gulf. American expansion has accelerated: a store opened at the Mall of America in Minnesota in September 2026, another at Augusta Mall in Georgia, and a third taking former Sears space at Haywood Mall in South Carolina. In October 2026 the company entered Qatar through a partnership with Alshaya Group, widening a Gulf footprint that already included Kuwait and Dubai.

Competition has shifted decisively online. Shein and Temu now set the price expectation for a large share of the value market, and in July 2026 the BBC reported that Primark had cut prices in response. The company has also begun to move away from its in-store-only stance, rolling out Click & Collect in Great Britain and, in September 2026, announcing home delivery there. Supplier conditions have drawn repeated scrutiny, most sharply after the 2013 Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh, where one of its suppliers was housed. On materials, 74% of garments used recycled fibres as of 2025, and a long-term recycled polyester agreement with Circ was signed in September 2026.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Who owns Primark?
Associated British Foods, the FTSE-listed conglomerate, has owned Primark for decades. A spin-off that would make Primark a standalone public company is planned for late 2027.
Who is the CEO of Primark?
Paul Marchant has been chief executive since 2009. Founder Arthur Ryan led the company until 2009 and died in 2019.
    How much is Primark worth?
Primark is not separately valued. Its annual revenue is roughly £9 billion to £10 billion as part of ABF, and the 2027 spin-off will establish a public market valuation for the first time.
Is Primark the same as Penneys?
Yes. The chain trades as Penneys in Ireland and as Primark everywhere else, after a 1976 trademark dispute with JCPenney forced the Penneys name out of use outside Ireland.
Does Primark have online shopping or delivery?
For most of its history Primark was in-store only. It now offers Click & Collect in Great Britain and announced home delivery in Britain in September 2026. US shoppers can browse a catalogue online but generally have to buy in store.
