Play-Doh
United States"The original modeling compound for creative play"
About
Play-Doh began life as a wallpaper cleaner in the 1930s, invented by Noah McVicker for the Cincinnati soap company Kutol Products. When coal-based heating declined, so did demand for the cleaner. In the mid-1950s, Noah’s nephew Joseph McVicker, a teacher’s aide, noticed children using the dough for art projects. He convinced his aunt, who ran the company, to remove the detergent, add almond scent and bright colors, and sell it as a toy. The product was first sold to Cincinnati schools and demonstrated at an educational convention in 1956. Major department stores placed orders, and advertisements on the children’s TV show Captain Kangaroo in 1957 drove sales from under $100,000 to nearly $3 million in one year.
Rainbow Crafts, the McVickers’ company, was sold to General Mills in 1965, passed to Kenner Parker Toys in 1987, and finally to Hasbro in 1991. Today, Play-Doh is a brand within Hasbro’s portfolio, headquartered in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The core product remains a non-toxic, reusable modeling compound sold in small tubs in dozens of colors. Over the decades, the brand has expanded into hundreds of playsets, including the iconic Fun Factory (1960), Kitchen Creations, Ice Cream sets, and licensed character sets such as Peppa Pig and Sesame Street. Digital products include mobile apps and video games like Play-Doh: Create & Learn.
The brand identity is built on bright colors, the distinctive red-and-yellow script logo, and the signature sweet vanilla scent (a proprietary blend that Hasbro has never fully revealed). Marketing targets preschoolers and parents, emphasizing creativity, fine motor skills, and safety. Play-Doh is sold in over 75 countries, with regional variations in packaging and playsets. Recent innovations include Play-Doh Plus, a softer formula launched in 2023, and a Play-Doh Recycled line using 100% recycled plastic tubs introduced in 2024.
