Pixar Animation Studios is an American computer-animation company widely credited with pioneering and popularizing feature-length CGI filmmaking. Based in California and now a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company, the studio grew out of a computer graphics group originally tied to Lucasfilm before being spun off as an independent business in the 1980s with backing from Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Pixar made history in 1995 with Toy Story, the first fully computer-animated feature film, a landmark that transformed the animation industry and launched a string of critically and commercially successful releases. Films such as Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Up, WALL-E, Inside Out and the Toy Story sequels earned the studio a reputation for marrying technical innovation with emotionally resonant, often surprisingly mature storytelling that appealed to children and adults alike. Behind the scenes, Pixar's proprietary rendering technology and its collaborative "brain trust" creative process became influential models across the field.
