Petrobras, officially Petróleo Brasileiro S.A., is a Brazilian state-owned multinational oil and gas giant headquartered in Rio de Janeiro. The name is a portmanteau of "Petróleo" and "Brasil," translating to Brazilian Petroleum Corporation. As a majority state-owned enterprise, it dominates the country's energy sector, with operations spanning exploration, production, refining, and distribution. The company was founded on October 3, 1953, by President Getúlio Vargas under Law No. 2,004, which established a state monopoly over Brazil's oil industry. This nationalist move aimed to secure Brazil's control over its petroleum reserves, critical for national development. Over the decades, Petrobras became a world leader in deep-water and ultra-deep-water oil extraction, particularly in the Santos Basin's pre-salt layer. Its technological innovations in offshore drilling have set industry benchmarks.

Petrobras has faced significant controversies, most notably the Operation Car Wash corruption scandal that erupted in 2014. Investigations revealed a vast scheme where executives colluded with politicians and construction companies to inflate contracts and funnel billions in bribes. The scandal led to imprisonments, including former President Lula, and caused a severe financial and reputational crisis. More recently, the company has navigated political interference in fuel pricing policies.

As of 2024, Petrobras announced a $111 billion five-year investment plan (2024–2028), focusing on increasing pre-salt oil production, expanding natural gas infrastructure, and allocating 15% of the budget to low-carbon projects like renewables and carbon capture.
