    About

Off-White began as a Milan-based project in 2012 and was formally established as a company in 2013 by Virgil Abloh, an American architect and DJ who had spent the previous decade running the Chicago boutique RSVP Gallery and serving as creative director for Kanye West. The label's visual language was fixed from the start: Helvetica type, quotation marks around ordinary words, zip ties, diagonal hazard stripes, and garments cut apart and reassembled with the seams showing. Abloh called the approach a readymade, borrowing the term from Marcel Duchamp, and the motto printed on the labels read Question Everything.

The brand's commercial breakthrough came through collaborations rather than runway alone. A 2017 capsule with Nike, The Ten, deconstructed ten of the sportswear company's archive silhouettes and reset resale expectations for sneakers generally. Partnerships with IKEA, Rimowa, Converse, Jimmy Choo and Evian followed, alongside a womenswear line introduced in 2016 and a home goods category. Abloh was named artistic director of Louis Vuitton menswear in March 2018, the first Black designer to lead a Louis Vuitton category, while keeping his Off-White role.

Abloh died in Chicago on November 28, 2021, at 41, from cardiac angiosarcoma, a cancer he had kept private since a 2019 diagnosis. LVMH, which had held a majority stake since 2021, sold Off-White to the New York brand-management firm Bluestar Alliance in September 2024 for an undisclosed sum. Ilse Miekka, a longtime collaborator of Abloh's, continues as creative director. The company's most visible recent initiative, 10x10: Icons Reimagined, presented ten reworked archive pieces inside an installation called the Imaginary Palace during Milan Fashion Week in September 2026.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Who owns Off-White now?
Bluestar Alliance has owned the brand since September 2024, when LVMH sold it. The New York firm manages it alongside a portfolio of licensed labels, and the Milan design team stayed in place through the transition.
Is Off-White still operating after Virgil Abloh's death?
Yes. Abloh died in November 2021 and the label has continued to release collections under creative director Ilse Miekka, including the 10x10: Icons Reimagined project shown in Milan in September 2026.
What was the Off-White x Nike The Ten collection?
The Ten was a 2017 collaboration in which Abloh cut apart and rebuilt ten Nike and Jordan silhouettes, including the Air Jordan 1, Air Presto and Air Max 97. The pairs sold out on release and have traded well above retail on resale platforms since.
