Nubank
Mexico"The largest fintech bank in Latin America"
About
Nubank, officially Nu Holdings Ltd., began on May 6, 2013, when Colombian-born David Vélez, frustrated by Brazil's high-fee banking system, secured seed funding from Sequoia Capital. He brought on Cristina Junqueira and Edward Wible as co-founders, and together they launched a no-fee credit card in 2014, managed entirely through a smartphone app. The product quickly attracted millions of customers tired of opaque fees and poor service from traditional banks. By 2018 Nubank had become a unicorn, and in December 2021 it went public on the New York Stock Exchange with a valuation of $45 billion, one of the largest IPOs ever in Latin America.
Today Nubank serves roughly 131 million customers across Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia. Its product suite has grown far beyond the original credit card to include digital accounts, personal loans, a premium tier called Nubank Ultraviolet, small-business banking, and investment products through NuInvest. The company also offers insurance, such as Nubank Vida, and a cashback rewards program. Nubank operates as a mobile-first platform, letting customers handle transfers, bill payments, and purchases from their phones, with no branch network.
Nubank's brand identity rests on trust and transparency. For most of its early history the company spent nothing on marketing, relying instead on word-of-mouth and a strong customer-centric culture. In October 2024 Brazil's INPI granted Nubank "highly-renowned" brand status, giving it broader trademark protection. By 2025 Brand Finance ranked Nubank the fourth strongest banking brand globally and the strongest among neobanks, with Brazilian consumers rating it highest in trust, preference, and affection. The company is listed on the NYSE under the ticker NU and also trades on the B3 as ROXO34.
