NME, originally the New Musical Express, started as a British music newspaper in 1952 and quickly made history by publishing the country's first singles chart. It became the best-selling music newspaper in the UK, wielding enormous influence over musical tastes, especially during the punk rock explosion of the 1970s, when its sharp, opinionated journalism helped define the movement. The brand evolved from newsprint to glossy magazine and eventually to digital-first, ceasing its paid print edition in 2018.
