    About

On January 13, 1972, Antonio Inoki, a wrestler who had already fought Muhammad Ali to a draw in a landmark mixed-rules bout, founded New Japan Pro-Wrestling in Tokyo. Inoki wanted a promotion that felt like a real sport, not a carnival show. He called it "strong style": hard strikes, submission holds, and matches where the outcome felt genuinely uncertain. The first event drew 5,000 fans to the Ota Ward Gymnasium. Within a decade, NJPW had become Japan's dominant wrestling organization, its roster filled with athletes trained in Inoki's dojo who could wrestle, kick, and grapple with legitimate intensity.

NJPW's calendar is built around major tournaments and events rather than weekly television. The G1 Climax, a month-long round-robin tournament held each summer, is widely considered the most grueling competition in wrestling, winners earn a title shot at the Tokyo Dome. Wrestle Kingdom, held every January 4 since 1992, regularly sells over 30,000 tickets and functions as the promotion's Super Bowl. The IWGP Heavyweight Championship, first won by Inoki himself in 1973, remains one of the most respected titles in the sport. In 2014, NJPW launched NJPW World, a streaming service that brought its product to international audiences for the first time, helping build a dedicated English-speaking fanbase.

In 2024, parent company Bushiroad sold NJPW to a consortium including TV Asahi and CyberAgent, the latter already owning DDT, Tokyo Joshi Pro-Wrestling, and Pro Wrestling NOAH. The consolidation reshaped Japanese wrestling's competitive landscape. Hiroshi Tanahashi, a seven-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion and the face of NJPW's 2010s resurgence, took over as CEO. The promotion continues to expand internationally through its STRONG brand in North America and co-promotional events with AEW and ROH. Despite ownership changes and market shifts, NJPW remains the largest wrestling promotion in Japan and a global benchmark for athletic, sports-oriented professional wrestling.
