Netscape

Netscape Communications Corporation, initially founded as Mosaic Communications Corporation on April 4, 1994, by James H. Clark and Marc Andreessen, quickly rose to prominence in the nascent World Wide Web. Clark, a serial entrepreneur who had previously founded Silicon Graphics, Inc., provided the business acumen, while Andreessen brought his experience leading the development of NCSA Mosaic, the first widely accessible graphical web browser, at the University of Illinois.

The company's flagship product, the Netscape Navigator web browser, became the dominant internet navigation tool in the mid-1990s, capturing an overwhelming share of the market. Beyond its browser, Netscape was responsible for significant web innovations, including the development of JavaScript, a scripting language essential for interactive web pages, and HTTP cookies, which enabled user tracking and personalization. The company also offered enterprise solutions through its SuiteSpot server software and provided a consumer web portal known as Netcenter.

Netscape's initial public offering in August 1995 is often cited as a pivotal moment in the dot-com boom, signaling intense investor interest in internet-based companies. However, this early success was met with fierce competition, particularly from Microsoft's Internet Explorer, leading to the first major "browser war." Despite its technological contributions and early market lead, Netscape's market share gradually eroded, falling below one percent by 2006.

In November 1998, Netscape was acquired by America Online (AOL) for $10 billion. While the company as an independent entity ceased operations when AOL discontinued support for its browser on March 1, 2008, the Netscape brand name continued to be used for an internet service provider until November 2025. The legacy of Netscape's browser lives on through the open-source community; its 1998 decision to open-source its code led to the formation of the Mozilla Organization and the eventual development of the Firefox browser.
