MongoDB Inc.
United StatesAbout
MongoDB Inc. was founded in 2007 as 10gen by Kevin P. Ryan, Dwight Merriman, and Eliot Horowitz, all veterans of DoubleClick. The founders had built DoubleClick to serve over 400,000 ads per second and found that relational databases could not scale to meet their needs. They initially set out to create a platform-as-a-service built on open source components, but when no existing database satisfied their requirements, they built a document-oriented database internally, what became MongoDB. After Google launched App Engine, the founders pivoted the company to focus entirely on the database product. The company renamed from 10gen to MongoDB Inc. in 2013.
Dev Ittycheria took over as CEO in 2014 and is credited with turning the company around, leading it through its 2017 IPO and scaling it to over $2 billion in annual revenue. In 2025, Chirantan "CJ" Desai succeeded Ittycheria as CEO. The company is headquartered at Paramount Plaza in New York City and employs over 5,000 people globally. MongoDB has raised $81 million in venture capital from investors including Sequoia Capital, Intel Capital, and NEA.
MongoDB's flagship product is the MongoDB database, a NoSQL document store that uses JSON-like documents with flexible schemas. In 2016, the company launched MongoDB Atlas, a fully managed cloud database service that now accounts for approximately 70% of total revenue. The platform has expanded to include Atlas Search, Atlas Vector Search for AI workloads, real-time analytics, and stream processing. MongoDB also offers Enterprise Advanced for on-premise deployments, MongoDB Compass for data exploration, and MongoDB University for training and certification. The company has invested more than $1 billion in research and development.
As of mid-2026, MongoDB serves over 67,000 customers, including 75% of the Fortune 100. The company's net retention rate exceeds 110%. For fiscal year 2026, MongoDB reported revenue of $2.46 billion, with total assets of $3.76 billion and stockholders' equity of $2.95 billion. The company is publicly traded on the Nasdaq under the ticker MDB and is a component of the Russell 1000 index.
