Miramax, LLC began operations in New York City in 1979 under the leadership of brothers Bob and Harvey Weinstein alongside Corky Burger. The company started as an independent distributor focusing on foreign and domestic art-house films before expanding its scope significantly after acquiring distribution rights for titles like Sex, Lies, and Videotape. This early success established a reputation for identifying unconventional projects that major studios initially overlooked.

The studio's trajectory shifted in 1993 when The Walt Disney Company acquired Miramax for $60 million. During this period, the brand became the most successful independent studio of its era, releasing films such as Pulp Fiction and Shakespeare in Love, which earned multiple Academy Awards. The Weinstein brothers utilized the financial backing to champion a slate of critically acclaimed and commercially viable movies that redefined mainstream cinema throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.

A scandal involving sexual misconduct allegations against Harvey Weinstein in late 2017 led to his removal from the company and subsequent criminal conviction. Following the departure of the founders, Disney sold the studio to Filmyard Holdings in 2010. In 2016, beIN Media Group acquired Miramax and later formed a joint venture with Paramount Global to manage operations. Today the studio focuses on genre films, horror franchises, and original content while maintaining its distinct brand identity within the broader media landscape. [edit]
