In 1931, the company released its first truck, the Mazda-Go, marking the start of its automotive manufacturing legacy. The brand name Mazda derives from Ahura Mazda, the Zoroastrian deity representing wisdom and light, chosen to reflect the company's ambition for global reach.

Under the leadership of CEO Masamichi Kogai, the manufacturer maintains a distinct identity centered on Jinba Ittai, a philosophy describing the seamless connection between horse and rider. This approach drives the engineering of vehicles like the CX-5 and the MX-5 Miata, which prioritize handling dynamics over sheer size or power. While competitors like Toyota and Honda dominate by volume, Mazda differentiates itself through premium interior finishes and the Kodo: Soul of Motion design language that emphasizes fluid lines and sculpted surfaces.

The automaker achieved a unique milestone in motorsport history as the only Japanese manufacturer to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, securing victory in 1991 with the rotary-powered Mazda 787B. Although mass-market production of the Wankel rotary engine ceased in the early 2010s, development continues.
