Marvel Studios

Marvel Studios began life as Marvel Films in December 1993, a division of Marvel Entertainment Group founded by producer Avi Arad. The studio was formally reorganized under its current name in August 1996, but its true transformation came after The Walt Disney Company acquired Marvel Entertainment in 2009 for $4.2 billion. That purchase gave the studio the financial muscle and distribution network to scale its ambitions dramatically.

The studio's defining achievement is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a shared continuity of films and television series that launched with Iron Man in 2008. Under the creative direction of Kevin Feige, who became president of Marvel Studios in 2007, the MCU grew into the highest-grossing film franchise of all time, surpassing $25 billion in global box office by early 2023. The interconnected storytelling model pioneered by Feige set a new standard for franchise filmmaking, with standalone character films building toward crossover events like The Avengers (2012) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Beyond feature films, Marvel Studios expanded into streaming television with Disney+ series such as WandaVision, Loki, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, beginning in 2021. The studio also oversees licensing of its vast library of over 8,000 characters for merchandise, video games, and theme park attractions. Following Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox in 2019, Feige assumed the role of chief creative officer for Marvel Entertainment, bringing the X-Men and Fantastic Four back under the studio's control for future projects.
