About
Lyft began life in 2007 as Zimride, a long-distance carpooling venture founded by Logan Green and John Zimmer. Green conceived the idea after struggling to coordinate rides between UC Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. In June 2012, the company launched a short-haul ride-sharing service in San Francisco under the Lyft name, distinguished by the large, fuzzy pink mustaches drivers attached to their cars. That branding, dreamed up by Ethan Eyler of Carstache, became the company's visual signature for years.
The service expanded rapidly. A $15 million Series B round from Founders Fund in January 2013 fueled growth into Los Angeles. By September 2018, Lyft had completed its one billionth ride. That same year, the company acquired Motivate, the largest U.S. bikeshare operator, and launched scooter-sharing in Denver. Lyft went public on March 29, 2019, pricing at $72 per share and opening at $87.24 on the Nasdaq, though the stock later settled at $78.29. The IPO targeted a $23 billion valuation.
Today, Lyft operates across more than 300 U.S. cities and parts of Canada, with additional European services through the Freenow app. The company coordinates roughly 9 million rides per day for 25 million active riders. In 2024, Lyft reported its first annual profit, $22.8 million, on $5.78 billion in revenue, a milestone after years of losses. David Risher became CEO in 2023, succeeding Green, and has focused on customer experience, cost restructuring, and preparing for autonomous vehicle integration.
