Lenovo Group Limited started life in a dusty Beijing guardhouse on November 1, 1984, when a team of 11 engineers led by Liu Chuanzhi and Danny Lui took out a $25,000 loan from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. They called the company Legend and began by distributing foreign tech products, HP printers, Toshiba laptops, before building their own PCs. By the early 1990s, Legend owned 30% of China's PC market, a stunning run for a startup with state roots.

The real game-changer came in 2005, when Lenovo bought IBM's Personal Computing division for $1.75 billion. That deal brought the ThinkPad brand, a legendary line of black laptops with red trackpoints that business travelers swore by. Overnight, Lenovo became a global player. The company had already rebranded from Legend to Lenovo in 2003, the Le from Legend, novo from Latin for new, signaling its ambitions beyond China.

Today Lenovo is the world's largest PC vendor by unit sales, a position it has held since January 2021. Its product lineup runs from the iconic ThinkPad and consumer Yoga laptops to the Legion gaming rigs, Motorola smartphones, and ThinkSystem servers for data centers. Yang Yuanqing, who joined as a salesman in 1989, has been CEO since 2005 and now also serves as chairman. The company operates dual headquarters in Beijing and Morrisville, North Carolina, with R&D centers across China, the US, Japan, Germany, and Taiwan. Annual revenue sits around $83 billion, placing it at number 196 on the Fortune Global 500.

Lenovo hasn't been without controversy. In 2018, security researchers found Superfish adware preinstalled on some consumer laptops, sparking a backlash over privacy and the company's ties to the Chinese government. Lenovo removed the software and tightened its software vetting, but the episode lingers in the minds of security-conscious buyers. Despite that, the company continues to push into AI with a full-stack strategy covering AI PCs, servers, and services, aiming to keep its edge in a fiercely competitive market. [edit]
