    About

ING Group, officially ING Groep N.V., is a Dutch multinational banking and financial services corporation headquartered in Amsterdam. It was founded on March 4, 1991, through the merger of insurance company Nationale-Nederlanden and banking company NMB Postbank Groep, forming the Internationale Nederlanden Groep. The merger was enabled after legal restrictions on mergers between insurers and banks were lifted in the Netherlands in 1990. ING’s roots trace back to predecessors including De Rijkspostspaarbank (national postal savings bank, 1881), De Postcheque- en Girodienst (postal giro service, 1918), and the Nederlandsche Middenstands Bank (NMB, 1927), as well as insurers De Nationale Levensverzekering Bank (1863) and De Nederlanden van 1845. The company’s name was soon abbreviated by the market to ING, and it later changed its statutory name to ING Groep N.V.

ING’s products and services span retail banking (savings, payments, investments, loans, mortgages, credit cards), wholesale banking (specialized lending, corporate finance, debt and equity market solutions, sustainable finance, payments and cash management, trade and treasury services), asset management, investment banking, private banking, and wealth management. It also offers ESG-focused retail products and operates ING Direct, a direct banking concept launched in 1997 that offers branchless banking with attractive savings accounts. As of Q1 2026, ING served 40.8 million customers across nine retail markets and a broader wholesale banking network. The company employs approximately 62,770 people as of June 2026.

Financially, ING reported revenue of €23.035 billion in 2025, net income of €6.327 billion, total assets of €1.054 trillion, and total equity of €50.953 billion. Forbes reported 2026 revenue of $26.9 billion, assets of $1.3 trillion, and profits of $7.4 billion. Long-term debt stood at €150 billion as of December 2019. ING is publicly traded on Euronext Amsterdam (INGA) and the New York Stock Exchange (ING), and is a component of the AEX and EURO STOXX 50 indices. It has been listed as a global systemically important bank since 2011 and, since late 2014, has been designated a Significant Institution under European Banking Supervision, directly overseen by the European Central Bank.
