HuffPost, originally known as The Huffington Post, launched on May 9, 2005. It was conceived by Arianna Huffington, Andrew Breitbart, Kenneth Lerer, and Jonah Peretti as a progressive American news website. The goal was to offer a liberal perspective that could stand against conservative news aggregators like the Drudge Report. The site quickly grew, blending hard news reporting with lifestyle features, entertainment coverage, and opinion pieces. Its headquarters are in New York City, and it has expanded globally with editions in many languages and regions.

The publication has a dynamic ownership history. AOL acquired The Huffington Post in March 2011 for $315 million, with Arianna Huffington continuing as editor-in-chief. Verizon Communications then bought AOL in June 2015, bringing HuffPost under the Verizon Media umbrella. Most recently, BuzzFeed acquired HuffPost in November 2020. A significant branding change occurred in 2017 when the name was shortened to HuffPost.

HuffPost's content covers a wide range of topics, including politics, business, technology, and culture. It offers a mix of news, satire, blogs, and original content. In 2012, the site achieved a notable milestone by winning a Pulitzer Prize for its series on wounded veterans, making it the first commercially run U.S. digital media company to receive this award.
