    About

HTC Corporation, trading as High Tech Computer Corporation, stands as a pivotal chapter in the history of mobile technology. Founded in 1997 and based in Taoyuan, Taiwan, the company started its journey by building laptop computers for other brands before pivoting to smartphones. Its early days were defined by Windows Mobile devices, but the real turning point came when it joined the Open Handset Alliance to help build Android. The HTC Dream, sold as the T-Mobile G1, became the very first phone to run that operating system, launching a new era for mobile computing. The company reached its peak in the third quarter of 2011, briefly holding the title of the largest smartphone vendor in the United States. That dominance proved fleeting as competition from Samsung and Apple intensified, driving market share down to just 7.2% by April 2015. Facing consecutive net losses, HTC shifted its strategy in 2016 to explore virtual reality with the HTC Vive, partnering with Valve to create a new platform. By 2017, the landscape had changed so drastically that the company sold roughly half its design team and non-exclusive smartphone intellectual property rights to Google for $1.1 billion, effectively exiting the core hardware race to focus on emerging technologies.
