Gretsch

Friedrich Gretsch opened his first workshop in Brooklyn, New York, in 1883 after immigrating from Germany. He started by crafting banjos, tambourines, and drums before expanding into guitars under the leadership of his son Fred Sr. The company moved to a larger facility in 1916 and grew into a major manufacturer of percussion and stringed instruments throughout the early 20th century.

The brand reached its commercial peak during the mid-20th century through strategic collaborations with famous musicians. Chet Atkins worked closely with the firm starting in 1954 to design hollowbody electric guitars like the 6120. This partnership also led to the creation of the Filter'Tron pickup in 1957, which solved buzzing issues common in earlier single-coil designs and established a bright, articulate tone that defined the sound of rockabilly and country music.

George Harrison brought the brand global fame when he played a 1958 Jet Firebird on stage with The Beatles. Today, the fourth generation of the founding family runs the business as a private entity. Fred Gretsch Jr. serves as President and CEO while the headquarters operate out of Nashville, Tennessee. The company maintains a hybrid production model where premium USA-made instruments are crafted alongside more affordable Electromatic models built in Asia. [edit]
