Greater Anglia

Greater Anglia operates as the trading name for Transport UK East Anglia Limited, running commuter and inter-city rail services from London Liverpool Street into Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Hertfordshire, and Cambridgeshire. The franchise began in February 2012 when Abellio took over from National Express, initially operating under the simpler Greater Anglia banner before rebranding to Abellio Greater Anglia in late 2013. A significant shift occurred in March 2017 when Mitsui & Co. acquired a 40% stake in the operator, creating a mixed-ownership structure that lasted until the company entered public ownership on October 12, 2025.

Following nationalization, the brand retained its identity while integrating into the Great British Railways network. The operator manages a diverse fleet including Class 800 and 802 Intercity Express Trains for long-distance routes to Norwich and Great Yarmouth, alongside Class 755 and 759 bi-mode units for regional duties. Recent infrastructure work includes a major refurbishment of Great Yarmouth Station completed in September 2026 and the introduction of new Alstom-built trains unveiled in July 2026 designed to carry the updated national livery.

Service reliability has faced intense scrutiny during the summer of 2026 due to extreme heat causing track deformation near Wickford, leading to multiple derailments within a single week. Additional disruptions stemmed from cable thefts, signal failures, and trespassing incidents that forced widespread cancellations across the network. Despite these operational challenges, the company continues to serve approximately 100 million passenger journeys annually and launched digital railcard purchases via its mobile app in September 2026.
