Giant Eagle

Giant Eagle started in 1931 when the Goldstein and Porter families merged their Pittsburgh-area grocery stores during the Great Depression. What began as a single store grew into the dominant supermarket chain across western Pennsylvania and parts of Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana, and Maryland. The company pioneered the grocery-fuel combo in the 1980s with GetGo, a network of convenience stores and gas stations that became a regional staple. By 2025, Giant Eagle operated 211 supermarkets under three banners: standard Giant Eagle, upscale Market District, and compact Giant Eagle Express. It also ran eight standalone pharmacies. In 2022, the chain generated over $11.1 billion in revenue, earning it the 36th spot on Forbes' list of largest private U.S. companies.

A major shift came in 2023 when Giant Eagle sold its 274 GetGo locations to Alimentation Couche-Tard, owner of Circle K. The deal closed in 2024, ending the fuelperks! loyalty program that had linked grocery spending to gas discounts. Then, on July 1, 2026, Kroger announced plans to buy Giant Eagle for $1.65 billion. The acquisition is expected to close in 2027, subject to regulatory approval. If it goes through, Giant Eagle will become part of the largest supermarket chain in the United States.[edit]
