    About

Geffen Records was founded in 1980 by David Geffen, initially called the David Geffen Company, as the music arm of Geffen Pictures. Warner Bros. Records provided distribution and financial backing. The label's first major release was John Lennon and Yoko Ono's Double Fantasy in 1980, which won the Grammy for Album of the Year and became a massive posthumous success after Lennon's murder. In 1987, Geffen released Guns N' Roses' Appetite for Destruction, the best-selling debut album in U.S. history at the time, cementing the label's reputation for breaking rock acts.

David Geffen sold the label to MCA Inc. in 1990 for $545 million in stock. MCA was later acquired by Seagram in 1995 and folded into Universal Music Group. In 1999, Geffen was merged into Interscope Geffen A&M, operating as a distributed label within Interscope Records. A major restructuring in 2014 saw Geffen absorbed into the Interscope Capitol Labels Group, but it was relaunched as a stand-alone frontline label in 2017 under president Neil Jacobson. Today, Geffen operates within UMG's Interscope Capitol Labels Group, led by Chairman/CEO John Janick.

Geffen's catalog includes seminal albums by Nirvana, Guns N' Roses, John Lennon, and many others. The label has also faced controversies, including legal battles over royalties after the MCA sale, a 2021 lawsuit over Nirvana's Nevermind cover art, and a 2005 payola settlement. Recent developments include signing acts like Boygenius and Greta Van Fleet, and a strategic shift toward direct-to-consumer channels and Web3 initiatives.
