Game Informer
United States"The revival of a gaming journalism icon"
About
Game Informer, often shortened to GI, was a staple of American gaming media for over three decades. The monthly magazine covered the video game industry with news, features, strategy guides, and reviews of games and consoles. It first appeared in August 1991 as an in-house newsletter for FuncoLand, a video game retailer. When GameStop acquired FuncoLand in 2000, Game Informer came along, and the company's extensive in-store promotion helped the magazine reach a massive audience. By June 2017, it ranked as the fifth most popular magazine in the United States by circulation.
In August 2024, GameStop abruptly shut down Game Informer after 33 years and 368 issues, taking the website offline and deleting its digital archive. But the story didn't end there. In March 2025, Gunzilla Games, a video game developer, acquired the brand and brought back the entire laid-off staff. They restored the digital archive and relaunched the website, and the print magazine returned to newsstands in June 2025. The revival has been met with enthusiasm from longtime readers who mourned the loss of one of the industry's most trusted voices.
Today, Game Informer operates as an independent entity called Game Informer Inc., headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where it all began. The editorial team continues to produce daily content, including news, reviews, previews, and podcasts, covering the global gaming landscape. Recent coverage includes hands-on previews of titles like Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave and Star Wars Zero Company, as well as reviews of Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls and the indie hit Big Walk. The brand's resilience and dedication to its readers have solidified its place as a beloved institution in gaming media.
