About
ESPN, an acronym for Entertainment and Sports Programming Network, launched on September 7, 1979, at 7 p.m. ET from Bristol, Connecticut, as the world's first 24-hour all-sports cable network. The idea was born in August 1978 when Bill Rasmussen, recently fired from his role as communications manager for the NHL's New England Whalers, and his son Scott found themselves stuck in traffic on Interstate 84. They envisioned a network that would deliver sports programming via satellite around the clock. Getty Oil Company purchased 85% of the network in February 1979, providing essential early funding. The network's first broadcast was a slow-pitch softball game between the Kentucky Bourbons and the Milwaukee Schlitz, and its early lineup included obscure events like Australian rules football and tractor pulls.
The network gained traction by acquiring broadcast rights to major professional and college sports throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. ESPN's flagship program, SportsCenter, debuted in 1979 and became the cornerstone of its programming, offering a continuous loop of highlights, analysis, and commentary. In the 1990s, the network expanded into original programming with shows like SportsCentury and the documentary series 30 for 30. The Walt Disney Company acquired ESPN in 1995 as part of its purchase of Capital Cities/ABC, and today Disney holds an 80% ownership stake while Hearst Communications owns the remaining 20%.
ESPN has grown into a multimedia empire that includes eight U.S. television networks, 24 international networks, ESPN Radio, ESPN.com, the ESPN App, and the direct-to-consumer streaming service ESPN+, which launched on April 12, 2018. The network also operates ESPN BET, a branded online sportsbook that debuted on November 14, 2023, and is now live in 17 states. Its documentary O.J.: Made in America won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2017. Despite facing challenges from cord-cutting and declining cable subscribers, ESPN remains the dominant force in sports media, with its TikTok account becoming the most-followed brand on the platform in 2023, amassing 44 million followers.
