Erewhon
United States"Organic. Sustainable. Luxury."
About
The original Erewhon opened its doors in 1966 as a macrobiotic health food store founded by Michio and Aveline Kushi. Decades later, the brand underwent a radical transformation when Sam Nazarian purchased the concept in 2004. He reimagined the space from a niche shop into a high-end retail destination that blends grocery shopping with luxury lifestyle branding.
Today the company runs 14 locations strictly within Greater Los Angeles including spots in Beverly Hills, Calabasas, West Hollywood, Santa Monica, and Culver City. Shoppers visit these stores for more than just groceries; they come for cold-pressed juices, exclusive wellness products like Date Lady syrup, and prepared foods such as spicy tuna crispy rice rolls served in their on-site cafes.
Cultural relevance drives much of the brand's strategy. In October 2026 Erewhon announced a permanent partnership with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to open a dedicated café and release an Alexander Calder-inspired smoothie. The company also expanded its reach beyond physical walls by securing distribution deals with Sprouts Farmers Market for its popular syrups while maintaining strict control over its core grocery inventory.
