In 1994, three of Hollywood's most powerful figures, Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen, joined forces to create a new kind of studio. Their ambition was nothing less than to challenge Disney's dominance in family entertainment. The animation division launched with a bold bet: a traditionally animated epic about Moses. The Prince of Egypt (1998) earned over $218 million worldwide and won an Oscar for Best Original Song. But the real game-changer came three years later. Shrek (2001) was a digital fairy tale that gleefully upended every Disney convention, and it became the first winner of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. That irreverent, pop-culture-soaked sensibility became the DreamWorks signature.

The studio's output accelerated rapidly through the 2000s and 2010s. Shrek 2 (2004) remains one of the highest-grossing animated films ever, while the Madagascar series (2005–2012) introduced a quartet of zoo animals who became global icons. Kung Fu Panda (2008) proved DreamWorks could deliver both action and heart, earning an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature. How to Train Your Dragon (2010) raised the bar even higher, its trilogy is widely regarded as one of the finest in modern animation, with the first film nominated for both Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score. By the time NBCUniversal acquired the studio in 2016 for $3.8 billion, DreamWorks had built a library of franchises that had grossed over $15 billion at the global box office.

Today, DreamWorks Animation operates from its Glendale, California headquarters, producing two to three theatrical films per year alongside a robust slate of television series for Netflix and Peacock. Recent hits include Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022), which revitalized the Shrek universe with a stunning hand-painted digital look, and The Wild Robot (2024), a critically acclaimed adaptation that sparked early Oscar talk. The studio is also exploring generative AI tools through a partnership with Runway, a move that has stirred debate about the future of animation labor. With Shrek 5 already announced for 2026, DreamWorks shows no signs of slowing down.[edit]
