Don Julio
Mexico"The Art of the Slow Sip"
About
Don Julio González was a third-generation agave farmer who decided he could make better tequila than what he was selling to other distilleries. In 1942, he founded La Primavera distillery in Atotonilco El Alto, Jalisco, with a radical idea: plant agaves farther apart so the piñas would grow bigger and sweeter. Neighbors called it El Julio spacing. He also introduced the first tall, barrel-shaped bottle to protect the liquid from light and to stand out on shelves. For six decades, the brand stayed in the family, building a reputation for quality over volume.
Diageo bought Don Julio in 2003 for around $100 million, a move that transformed the brand from a Mexican favorite into a global luxury icon. The master distiller today is Enrique De Colsa, who trained under González himself and maintains the original recipes and techniques. The core range includes Blanco (unaged, bright agave), Reposado (rested eight months in American oak), Añejo (aged 18 months), and the flagship 1942 (aged two and a half years, launched in 2002 to mark the founding year). In 2024, they introduced Don Julio 70 Añejo Cristalino, a cristalino that became an instant hit.
Don Julio competes head-to-head with Patrón, Clase Azul, and Casamigos in the premium tequila space. It is one of Diageo's fastest-growing super-premium brands, with net sales up 18% in fiscal 2023. The brand's marketing leans heavily on celebrity partnerships: Kendrick Lamar became a brand ambassador in 2022, and collaborations with LeBron James and the Grammy Awards keep it in the cultural spotlight. A $50 million distillery expansion is underway, set to boost capacity by 40% by 2025.
