About
In late 2022, Warner Bros. Discovery handed the keys to its DC Comics properties to James Gunn and Peter Safran, tasking them with something the company had tried and failed to do for years: build a coherent, interconnected universe across film, television, and animation. The result was DC Studios, a rebranding and restructuring of the earlier DC Films division that had overseen the uneven DC Extended Universe since 2016. Gunn, the writer-director behind Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, and Safran, producer of the Aquaman and The Conjuring franchises, laid out a ten-year plan called Gods and Monsters in January 2023. It began with a clean slate: the old DCEU would wind down, and a new DCU would launch with Gunn's own Superman: Legacy in July 2025.
The studio's mandate is ambitious. It aims to treat its slate as one continuous story, with actors crossing between movies, Max streaming series, and animated projects. Early greenlights include Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the HBO series Lanterns (a Green Lantern detective story), and the animated Creature Commandos. Meanwhile, Matt Reeves's The Batman universe and Todd Phillips's Joker films were designated Elseworlds, standalone stories outside the main continuity. This structure borrows from DC Comics' own multiverse concept, allowing for creative freedom while keeping the core universe focused.
DC Studios inherited a mixed legacy. The DCEU had grossed over $6 billion worldwide but was marred by behind-the-scenes turmoil, director clashes, and a string of underperformers like The Flash (2023). The cancellation of the nearly finished Batgirl film in 2022 for a tax write-off sparked outrage. Gunn and Safran's reboot is seen as a necessary reset, but it also risks alienating fans who had invested in the old continuity. Based at the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California, the studio operates as a division of Warner Bros. Discovery, reporting directly to CEO David Zaslav. Its success hinges on whether Gunn's offbeat sensibility and Safran's producing discipline can deliver the consistent quality that has long eluded DC on screen.
