Converse
United StatesAbout
Converse is an American footwear and lifestyle brand, one of the most iconic names in casual sneakers, now operating as a subsidiary of Nike. Founded in 1908 by Marquis Mills Converse in Malden, Massachusetts, the Converse Rubber Shoe Company initially produced rubber-soled footwear for men, women, and children. The company shifted its focus to athletic shoes in 1915, and in 1917 introduced the All-Star basketball shoe, a canvas high-top that would become its defining product. In 1921, semi-professional basketball player Charles "Chuck" Taylor joined the company as a salesman and promoter; his signature was added to the ankle patch in 1932, creating the Chuck Taylor All-Star. During World War II, Converse supplied boots and footwear for the U.S. military.
Converse dominated the early American athletic shoe market but faced financial struggles in the late 20th century amid competition from Nike and Reebok, filing for bankruptcy in 2001. Nike acquired the brand in 2003 for $305 million. Under Nike's ownership, Converse has repositioned itself as a lifestyle and fashion brand, with its classic styles remaining popular across generations and subcultures. The product line has expanded to include the premium Chuck 70, the Pro Leather, the Weapon, and modern silhouettes like the Run Star Motion. Converse frequently collaborates with designers, artists, and brands such as Comme des Garçons, Golf le Fleur, and Off-White for limited-edition releases.
Converse's brand identity emphasizes authenticity and self-expression, often featuring musicians, artists, and skateboarders in its marketing rather than elite athletes. The brand's iconic five-pointed star logo is synonymous with the Chuck Taylor All-Star. Converse products are sold in over 160 countries through company-owned stores, wholesale partners, and e-commerce. In fiscal 2024, Converse generated $2.1 billion in revenue, a 14% decline year-over-year. The brand has faced controversies over labor practices in Asian factories, cultural appropriation in a 2020 collaboration, and perceived declines in product quality. Recent initiatives include sustainability goals and the appointment of Jared Carver as CEO in 2023.
