Comcast Corporation, now a global media and technology giant, started as a small cable operator in Tupelo, Mississippi, in 1963. Today, its headquarters anchor the Comcast Center in Philadelphia, while its media arm, NBCUniversal, operates from 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. The company has grown into the fourth-largest telecommunications firm worldwide by revenue, trailing only AT&T, Verizon, and China Mobile, and it ranks 51st on the Forbes Global 2000 list for 2023. Domestically, it stands as the largest home internet provider, the second-largest cable TV company, and the third-largest pay-TV operator.

Comcast's reach extends far beyond cables and modems. Through its Xfinity brand, it serves residential and business customers across 40 states, offering internet, TV, phone, and mobile services via Xfinity Mobile, a mobile virtual network operator that runs on Verizon's network. The company also owns NBCUniversal, which it acquired fully in 2013, giving it control over major film studios like Universal Pictures, DreamWorks Animation, Illumination, and Focus Features. Its broadcast portfolio includes NBC, one of America's Big Three networks, along with Spanish-language channels Telemundo, TeleXitos, and Universo, plus cable networks like Bravo and Cozi TV. NBCUniversal also produces news and sports programming, with NBC News, Noticias Telemundo, NBC Sports, and Telemundo Deportes, and it operates the streaming service Peacock. In 2018, Comcast added Sky Group, a European media and telecommunications powerhouse, to its holdings, and its Universal Destinations & Experiences subsidiary runs theme parks around the globe.

Despite its corporate success, Comcast has faced significant public criticism. Customer satisfaction ratings for its cable services were among the lowest in the industry during the late 2000s, and it has been accused of violating net neutrality principles. Critics point to a lack of competition in many of its service areas and worry that its dual role as both content creator (through NBCUniversal) and distributor (as an ISP) could stifle fair competition. These concerns helped derail its proposed acquisition of Time Warner Cable in 2014. The Consumerist named it "The Worst Company in America" in both 2010 and 2014, a title that reflects the intense scrutiny the company continues to face. [edit]
