Chick-fil-A
Georgia"We didn't invent the chicken, just the chicken sandwich"
About
On May 23, 1946, S. Truett Cathy and his brother Ben opened a 10-seat diner called the Dwarf Grill in Hapeville, Georgia. The place was tiny, just a counter and a few stools, but it set the stage for something much bigger. Truett, a former Army man inspired by Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich, spent years perfecting a pressure-cooking method that could fry a chicken breast as fast as a hamburger patty. In 1961 he cracked it, and the signature chicken sandwich was born. The company registered as Chick-fil-A, Inc. that same year, its name a playful twist on the word 'filet.'
The first standalone Chick-fil-A opened on November 24, 1967, inside Atlanta's Greenbriar Shopping Center, one of the earliest fast-food operations in a mall food court. From that single location, the chain grew steadily, driven by a menu that refused to include beef burgers and a service ethos that trained every employee to say 'my pleasure' after each transaction. Truett picked up that phrase from a hotel worker and made it company policy. By 2022, Chick-fil-A had become the third-largest fast-food chain globally, with over 3,400 locations across 48 U.S. states, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Singapore.
The company's most visible trademark is its Sunday closure, a policy rooted in Truett's Southern Baptist faith and his belief that employees deserved a day off. 'I was too tired to work seven days a week,' he once said, 'and I wasn't going to ask my people to do what I wouldn't.' That decision, along with a corporate purpose statement that mentions glorifying God, has drawn both devoted customers and sharp criticism. In 2012, CEO Dan Cathy's public comments against same-sex marriage sparked boycotts and led some cities to block new restaurants. The company reversed its donations to anti-LGBTQ organizations in 2019, but the controversy still echoes.
Financially, the chain is a powerhouse. Though privately held by the Cathy family and not required to disclose earnings, industry estimates put system-wide sales above $20 billion annually. Each store averages around $9.3 million in revenue per year, the highest per-store figure in American fast food. The brand's 'Eat Mor Chikin' campaign, featuring cows holding signs, has become one of advertising's most recognizable gags. Meanwhile, the Chick-fil-A app and loyalty program have turned digital ordering into a major revenue stream. The company continues to expand internationally, test solar-powered microgrids, and open new locations, all while keeping its doors locked every Sunday.
