Booker Prize
United Kingdom"The world's most significant award for a single work of fiction."
About
Few literary honors carry the weight of the Booker Prize. Awarded annually since 1969, it singles out the best work of long-form fiction written in English and published in the UK or Ireland. Originally restricted to authors from the Commonwealth, Ireland, South Africa, and later Zimbabwe, the prize expanded eligibility in 2014 to include any English-language novel, a move that stirred debate among traditionalists. Winners receive £50,000 and a guaranteed boost in sales and global attention.
Each year, a five-person panel, drawn from authors, publishers, journalists, and sometimes politicians, actors, or musicians, selects the winning book. Gaby Wood has served as chief executive of the Booker Prize Foundation since 2015. The prize is one of British culture's most anticipated literary events, with critics noting that simply making the longlist or shortlist marks a career milestone.
A sister award, the International Booker Prize, recognizes a work of fiction translated into English and published in the UK or Ireland. Short story collections are eligible here, and the £50,000 prize is split between author and translator. A third award, the Children's Booker Prize, launched in 2025, with its first winner expected in 2027.
