Bones
Japan"Anime with a strong skeleton"
About
On October 1, 1998, a group of animators and producers walked away from Sunrise, one of Japan's biggest studios, to start something leaner. Masahiko Minami, along with Hiroshi Ōsaka and Toshihiro Kawamoto, founded Bones with a simple philosophy: build stories with a solid structural core, like bones. The name stuck. From a small office in Suginami, Tokyo, the studio began producing television series that would define the medium for a generation.
Bones quickly earned a reputation for fluid animation and ambitious storytelling. Its first major hit, Fullmetal Alchemist, aired in 2003 and became a global phenomenon. The studio followed with Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood in 2009, a more faithful adaptation that many critics rank among the greatest anime ever made. Other iconic series include My Hero Academia, a superhero saga that grew into a multi-billion yen franchise, and Mob Psycho 100, praised for its inventive visual style. Bones also produces original works like Eureka Seven and Carole & Tuesday, showing a willingness to take creative risks.
The studio operates as a private company, with Minami remaining president. Financial details are not public, but its consistent output of hits suggests strong revenue from licensing, merchandise, and streaming deals. Bones employs around 200 people and collaborates with freelance animators worldwide. Its headquarters in Suginami houses production teams for multiple series running simultaneously. The studio has never been acquired, maintaining independence that allows directors like Yutaka Nakamura and Kenji Nagasaki to push animation boundaries. Despite industry pressures, Bones has avoided major controversies and continues to be a benchmark for quality in anime.
