BMW

BMW started life building aircraft engines, not cars. On March 7, 1916, a company called Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG was founded in Munich, and two years later it merged with Rapp Motorenwerke to form Bayerische Motoren Werke AG. That circular blue-and-white emblem, often said to represent a spinning propeller, actually comes from the Bavarian state colors. During World War I, BMW supplied the Prussian army with engines, and after the war, when the Treaty of Versailles banned German aircraft production, the company turned to motorcycles. The first BMW motorcycle, the R32, launched in 1923. Cars came later, in 1928, when BMW bought the Eisenach vehicle factory and began building the Dixi, a licensed version of the Austin 7.

Today BMW is the world's leading premium automaker by sales volume, selling 2.46 million passenger vehicles and over 202,500 motorcycles in 2025 alone. The group includes MINI, Rolls-Royce, and BMW Motorrad, and its lineup ranges from the compact 1 Series to the ultra-luxurious 7 Series and the high-performance M division models. BMW has invested heavily in electric mobility, with models like the i4 and iX, and is developing hydrogen fuel cell technology with Toyota. The company operates more than 30 production sites globally and sells vehicles in over 140 countries.

BMW's reputation rests on engineering precision and driving dynamics. Consumer Reports consistently ranks BMW as the most reliable European luxury brand, and its vehicles often top owner satisfaction surveys. The company's strategy focuses on differentiation through unique features and performance, not price competition.
