Blumhouse Productions

Blumhouse Productions is an American independent film and television production company founded on September 30, 2000, by Jason Blum and Amy Israel. Originally named Blum Israel Productions until 2002, the company struggled for years, producing eight independent films that went largely unseen. The breakthrough came in 2007 with the acquisition and production of Oren Peli's Paranormal Activity, a film shot for $15,000 that eventually grossed $193 million worldwide. This success established the company's signature approach: low budgets, filmmaker creative freedom, and high returns.

Headquartered in Los Angeles and operating under Blumhouse Holdings, LLC, the company is majority-owned by Universal Pictures through a ten-year first-look deal signed in 2014. Jason Blum remains CEO, leading a team that includes Couper Samuelson, Beatriz Sequeira, and Ryan Turek. The company's output spans major horror franchises including Insidious, The Purge, Sinister, and Halloween, as well as critically acclaimed non-horror films like Whiplash (2014) and BlacKkKlansman (2018). In 2014, Blumhouse launched BH Tilt, a label for multi-platform releases, and has since expanded into television, digital media, publishing, and interactive gaming.

Blumhouse's model has proven consistently profitable: M3GAN (2023) earned $182 million on a $12 million budget. The company is known for launching and revitalizing careers, working with directors such as Jordan Peele, Mike Flanagan, Leigh Whannell, and M. Night Shyamalan. In January 2024, Blumhouse finalized a merger with Atomic Monster, the production company founded by James Wan. Recent projects include a Five Nights at Freddy's sequel, a Blair Witch Project remake in partnership with Lionsgate, and a Dead by Daylight film announced in 2023. [edit]
