BAE Systems

BAE Systems was formed on November 30, 1999, through a £7.7 billion merger of British Aerospace and Marconi Electronic Systems, the defense electronics arm of GEC. This union brought together a lineage of British manufacturing heritage: de Havilland built the world's first commercial jet airliner, the Comet; Supermarine created the Spitfire; Vickers constructed the Royal Navy's first submarines; and A.V. Roe and Yarrow Shipbuilders contributed early aviation and naval innovations. British Aerospace itself dated to 1977 when British Aircraft Corporation and Hawker Siddeley Aviation were nationalized, while Marconi's roots go back to Guglielmo Marconi's Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company founded in 1897.

Headquartered in London with a major operational hub in Farnborough, BAE Systems employs approximately 110,000 people across more than 40 countries. Its U.S. subsidiary, BAE Systems Inc., is based in Falls Church, Virginia, and ranks among the six largest suppliers to the U.S. Department of Defense. The company operates through five primary segments: Electronic Systems, Cyber and Intelligence, and three Platforms and Services divisions covering the U.S., UK, and international markets. Key products include the Eurofighter Typhoon, components for the F-35 Lightning II, Astute-class and Dreadnought-class submarines, armored vehicles for U.S. Army brigade combat teams, and electronic warfare systems.

In 2024, BAE Systems acquired Ball Aerospace, renaming it Space & Mission Systems, and celebrated its 25th anniversary on November 30, 2024. For fiscal year 2025, the company reported revenue of £28.336 billion and net income of £2.151 billion. Listed on the London Stock Exchange as a FTSE 100 component, major institutional shareholders include Capital Group Companies (14.18%), BlackRock (9.90%), and Invesco (4.97%). [edit]
