All-Nippon News Network
Japan"The news network behind TV Asahi's national bulletins"
About
The All-Nippon News Network, known almost everywhere as ANN, is the news-sharing cooperative that stitches TV Asahi together with 26 local stations across Japan. It started on January 1, 1970, and took its formal shape on April 1, 1974. The setup is straightforward: member stations swap national bulletins and regional reporting, so a viewer in Sapporo and a viewer in Fukuoka see the same Tokyo-anchored headlines alongside their own local coverage. TV Asahi Corporation in Tokyo runs the network, itself a subsidiary of TV Asahi Holdings, which sits under the Asahi Shimbun newspaper company.
ANN is not a separate broadcaster with its own channel number. It is the glue. Affiliates carry TV Asahi entertainment programming too, which is why the network's identity blurs with the parent station's schedule. Two of the 26 affiliates are double- or triple-affiliated with rival networks, a quirk that reflects how Japan's regional TV map was drawn in the postwar decades.
From 1989 to 2013, ANN also ran Asahi Newstar, a 24-hour satellite and cable news channel. That operation gave the network a round-the-clock outlet long before streaming reshaped how Japanese viewers get their news. ANN's role today remains mostly behind the scenes: coordinating bulletins, sharing footage, and keeping a nationwide news footprint running without owning every station outright.
