Air Canada

On September 1, 1937, a Lockheed L-10A Electra lifted off from Vancouver carrying two passengers and a sack of mail. The 50-minute hop to Seattle marked the first revenue flight for Trans-Canada Air Lines, a new crown corporation created by an act of parliament five months earlier. Renamed Air Canada in 1965, the airline grew from a single propeller plane into one of the world's largest carriers, today moving 45.3 million passengers a year across a network of 208 destinations.

The airline's early years were defined by technological firsts. In 1953, TCA launched ReserVec, the world's first computer reservation system with remote terminals, a system that would later inspire innovations in the industry. After full privatization in 1989, Air Canada absorbed its biggest rival, Canadian Airlines, in 2001. But the integration came at a cost: the airline filed for bankruptcy protection in 2003, emerging two years later leaner and restructured. That resilience has defined its modern era, especially after the pandemic hammered global aviation.

Today Air Canada operates from three major hubs: Montréal–Trudeau, Toronto–Pearson, and Vancouver. Its fleet of 335 aircraft, including 33 Airbus A220s, spans everything from short-haul turboprops to long-haul Boeing 777s. The airline is a founding member of Star Alliance, and its joint venture with United Airlines controls a combined 58% of seats in key transborder markets. In 2025, Skytrax named Air Canada the Best Airline in North America, while its Signature Suite lounge won the World's Best Business Class Lounge Dining award for the second year running. [edit]
