    About This Album

Bruce Springsteen's seventh studio album, Born in the U.S.A., landed on June 4, 1984, via Columbia Records. Produced by Springsteen, Jon Landau, Steven Van Zandt, and Chuck Plotkin, it was recorded in New York City with the E Street Band over a two-year span from January 1982 to March 1984. Several tracks originated from demo tapes intended for his stark previous album, Nebraska (1982). The sessions yielded between 70 and 90 songs; some became B-sides, others appeared on compilations, and many remain unreleased. The album's sound shifts toward pop rock, with heavy synthesizers and a punchy snare drum typical of 1980s mainstream rock. Lyrically, it contrasts that upbeat energy by exploring working-class struggles, disillusionment, patriotism, and personal relationships, though a few tracks offer humor. The cover, showing Springsteen from behind against an American flag, has been cited among the best album covers.

The album's promotional campaign included seven singles, five music videos, and three dance remixes. It topped charts in nine countries, including the U.S. and U.K., and became the best-selling album of 1985. Singles like Dancing in the Dark, Born in the U.S.A., I'm on Fire, and Glory Days all hit the U.S. top ten. Critics praised its storytelling and performances. The subsequent Born in the U.S.A. Tour (1984–1985) was a global phenomenon. The album has sold over 30 million copies worldwide, making it Springsteen's best-seller and one of the best-selling albums ever. It transformed Springsteen into a worldwide superstar, popularized heartland rock, and influenced countless artists. Rolling Stone and NME later ranked it among Springsteen's best and among the greatest albums of all time. In 2012, it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Springsteen later expressed mixed feelings about the album and its accompanying fame, and those lessons shaped his subsequent career choices.
