Yawara!

Naoki Urasawa, the acclaimed creator of Monster and 20th Century Boys, made his mark on the sports genre with Yawara!, a manga that ran in Big Comic Spirits from 1986 to 1993. Published by Shogakukan across 29 tankōbon volumes, the series blends comedy, drama, and judo action. The story follows Yawara Inokuma, a high school girl who just wants an ordinary life, but her grandfather, a former judo champion, has been secretly molding her into an Olympic gold medalist since childhood. Her reluctance to embrace her prodigious talent creates a constant push-and-pull that drives the narrative, as she navigates school, friendships, and the looming threat of international competition.

The manga's popularity spawned a live-action film starring Yui Asaka in 1989, and a long-running anime adaptation, Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl!, produced by Kitty Films and Madhouse. The anime aired on Yomiuri TV from 1989 to 1992, with each episode featuring a countdown to the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Two animated films followed in 1992 and 1996. AnimEigo brought the first 40 episodes to North America in 2008 but couldn't secure rights for the rest.

Yawara! won the 35th Shogakukan Manga Award in 1990 and has sold over 30 million copies, a testament to its enduring appeal. Urasawa's blend of sports drama and character-driven humor, along with his sharp art, makes this a standout in the genre, offering a fresh take on the athlete's dilemma between personal desire and external expectation.
