World Trigger
Daisuke Ashihara
Overview
Mysterious portals opened in Japan, unleashing alien invaders called Neighbors who proved impervious to conventional weapons. Ordinary citizens equipped with specialized combat gear known as Triggers joined Border, an organization dedicated to defending the country. Daisuke Ashihara launched this narrative in Weekly Shōnen Jump during February 2013, though editors moved it to Jump Square later that year due to its focus on strategy rather than traditional shonen action tropes.
The story follows Osamu Mikumo, a genius strategist who joins the defense force not for glory but to protect his city. Unlike many contemporaries relying on raw power levels or destiny, the series emphasizes teamwork, psychological warfare, and meticulous planning within a militarized society. The tone shifts between lighthearted slice-of-life training sequences and intense, brutal conflict during invasion events.
As of late 2025, the manga spans 29 collected volumes published under the Jump Comics imprint. Viz Media holds the license for English-speaking markets, distributing both digital chapters and physical tankōbon editions. While critical reception has been positive among fans of tactical anime, some observers note the slow pacing and lengthy exposition as barriers for readers accustomed to faster action.
