Where's Waldo?
"The original visual puzzle book series"
Martin Handford
Overview
On June 25, 1987, British illustrator Martin Handford released a simple yet revolutionary concept in the United Kingdom. Walker Books published Where's Wally?, a book that asked readers to find a single character hidden within sprawling, chaotic scenes packed with hundreds of figures. The premise was deceptively straightforward: locate the man in the red-and-white striped shirt, bobble hat, and round glasses. What followed was a global phenomenon that turned reading into an interactive game.
The American edition arrived just one year later under the title Where's Waldo?. Candlewick Press chose the new name to avoid confusion with the British slang term "wally," which refers to a foolish person. This linguistic shift marked the beginning of a franchise that would span decades and translate into over thirty languages. Each page became a microcosm of history or geography, featuring everything from the signing of the Magna Carta to futuristic cityscapes.
Handford designed every spread with meticulous care, often including more than 400 characters per page. He frequently inserted "red herrings", objects or other people wearing similar red-and-white patterns, to mislead searchers. While the first book focused solely on finding the main character, later entries like Find Waldo Now expanded the challenge by adding secondary targets such as his dog Woof or his friend Wenda.
