War and Peace
Leo Tolstoy
Overview
Leo Tolstoy spent nearly seven years crafting a narrative that swells to over 1,200 pages in most English editions. The novel originally appeared as The Year 1805 in installments between 1865 and 1867 before the author scrapped much of it to create the final version released in 1869. This massive work weaves together the lives of five aristocratic families, the Bezukhovs, Bolkonskys, Rostovs, Kuragins, and Drubetskoys, against the backdrop of the Napoleonic invasion of Russia in 1812.
Pierre Bezukhov, an illegitimate son who suddenly inherits a fortune, searches for meaning while Natasha Rostova navigates her coming-of-age amidst social expectations and heartbreak. Prince Andrei Bolkonsky seeks glory on the battlefield only to find disillusionment in the chaos of Austerlitz and Borodino. Tolstoy fills these personal dramas with detailed accounts of military strategy and philosophical essays arguing that history is driven by the collective will of millions rather than the decisions of great men like Napoleon.
The text itself reflects the language of the era, written primarily in Russian but featuring extensive French dialogue among the upper class. With 559 named characters appearing throughout the story, the book offers a granular look at Russian society from 1805 to 1820. Modern adaptations continue to grapple with its scale, including Sergei Bondarchuk's 1966 film which used thousands of extras and won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
