Urusei Yatsura
Rumiko Takahashi
Overview
Rumiko Takahashi launched her career with Urusei Yatsura, a chaotic manga that ran in Shogakukan's Weekly Shōnen Sunday from August 1978 to January 1987. The story follows Ataru Moroboshi, an unlucky pervert who accidentally proposes to Lum, an alien princess who insists he is her husband. This premise sparked 366 chapters collected into 34 volumes filled with Japanese mythology, wordplay, and slapstick comedy. The series sold over 35 million copies and won the 26th Shogakukan Manga Award in 1980 alongside the Seiun Award for Best Comic in 1987.
Viz Media first released the work in North America during the 1990s as Lum: Urusei Yatsura before halting production at nine volumes. They returned in 2019 with a new omnibus edition under the original title, featuring fresh translations through 2023. Anime adaptations also flourished, starting with a 1981 run of 194 episodes produced by Kitty Films. Later projects included twelve OVAs, six theatrical films, and a second TV series by David Production that aired from 2022 to 2024. Discotek Media recently rescued the home video rights for Blu-ray releases.
