Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun

Yashiro Nene stands in the third-floor girls' bathroom at Kamome Academy, a first-year student desperate for a boyfriend. She calls out to the school's most famous urban legend, Hanako-san, expecting a ghost girl who grants wishes. Instead, a mischievous boy with a one-piece swimsuit and a wooden sword appears. He reveals himself as the current Hanako, a powerful spirit bound to the school, and explains that Nene has accidentally broken an ancient vase belonging to him. To fix her mistake, she must become his assistant, helping him resolve supernatural disturbances while keeping the balance between the living and the dead.

AidaIro created this series, blending horror, comedy, and romance into a narrative deeply rooted in Japanese folklore. Serialized in Square Enix's Monthly GFantasy since December 2014, the story explores themes of loneliness, identity, and the weight of duty through the lens of the Seven School Mysteries. The manga has grown into a global phenomenon, selling over 10 million copies by early 2024 and inspiring a popular anime adaptation by Lerche.

The franchise continues to expand its reach with live-action films, stage plays, and mobile games. Fans connect with the distinct character designs and the respectful yet creative reinterpretation of traditional ghost stories. Recent updates confirm the manga resumed serialization in August 2026 after a hiatus, proving the enduring appeal of the Kamome Academy mysteries. [edit]
